Quality Score Fundamentals
Google Ads Quality Score (1-10) estimates ad quality compared to competitors bidding on the same keywords. It influences ad rank (position) and cost per click, higher scores earn better positions at lower costs. Three components contribute: expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. Each is rated Above Average, Average, or Below Average relative to auction competitors.
Expected CTR Optimization
Historical CTR on your ads influences expected CTR ratings. Write compelling ad copy with clear value propositions, strong calls to action, and keyword inclusion in headlines. Use all relevant ad extensions, sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, to increase SERP real estate and CTR. Pause underperforming ad variants; test new copy systematically rather than running dozens of low-impression ads.
Ad Relevance
Tight keyword-to-ad-to-landing-page alignment improves relevance scores. Single-theme ad groups with 5-15 closely related keywords outperform broad groups. Dynamic keyword insertion helps but isn't substitute for genuinely relevant copy. Match landing page H1 and content to ad promise, messaging mismatch hurts both Quality Score and conversion rate.
Landing Page Experience
Google evaluates page load speed, mobile usability, content relevance, and transparency (privacy policy, contact info). Slow landing pages hurt Quality Score and conversion. Dedicated landing pages outperform generic homepage sends for most campaigns. A/B test landing page elements independently of ad copy tests.
Quality Score and SEO Synergy
SEO keyword research informs PPC ad group structure. Landing pages optimized for Quality Score often align with on-page SEO best practices, fast, relevant, mobile-friendly. Share insights between teams: high-converting PPC keywords may reveal SEO content opportunities; organic landing pages can serve paid traffic with consistent messaging.
