The Three Ranking Pillars

Google's local algorithm evaluates: Relevance (how well listing matches query), Distance (proximity to searcher or specified location), and Prominence (how well-known and trusted the business appears). You can't change geography, but relevance and prominence are highly optimizable.

Relevance Signals

Primary category alignment with search query is the strongest relevance factor. Complete GBP with accurate services, attributes, and description. Website content reinforcing local service keywords. Consistent NAP across web. Location landing pages with localized content and LocalBusiness schema.

Prominence Signals

Review count, rating, and velocity. Backlinks to website and GBP. Brand search volume. Citations from authoritative directories. Local press and community involvement generating mentions. AI search visibility increasingly supplements traditional prominence as AI assistants recommend local businesses.

Distance and Service Area Strategy

Proximity is immovable for physical locations, businesses outside core service radius need stronger relevance and prominence to compete. Service-area businesses should configure SAB settings correctly, hide address if applicable, and define realistic service radii. Create location-specific content for each target area even without physical presence.

Tracking Map Pack Performance

GBP Insights shows discovery vs. direct searches and user actions (calls, directions, website clicks). Grid-based rank tracking tools map pack positions across geographic points, essential for understanding true local visibility beyond single-point checks. Segment performance by location for multi-branch brands.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can we outrank a closer pin with more blog posts?

Proximity is a pack object. Content on a distant URL rarely beats a nearer eligible listing.

Is prominence just review count?

Reviews are one signal family. Links, mentions, and listing quality also show up as prominence talk — we will not invent a weights table.

How is this different from organic local rankings?

Pack/pin vs organic local results are different SERP objects. Do not report them as one rank.

Should we hide the address to rank in more cities?

Service-area rules exist. Faking a pin is a policy risk, not a tactic we recommend.

Does this article list Google’s secret weights?

No. It names objects. Anyone selling exact percentages is guessing.

Where is Maps delivery?

Local SEO and GBP engines. This is how to think about the pack.
